National Poetry Month

Good new folks: April is National Poetry Month! And yeah, that's it. I just wanted to say that.

*and then walks backwards*

You didn't think that really could be it? Happy bad attempt at an April Fools!

Like most things in writing, poetry month is entirely what you make of it! Below I've compiled a list of fun ways to celebrate it :)

  • Sign up for the poets.org's Poem-a-Day, where they'll send you a new poem everyday.
  • Take on NaPoWriMo, where you can take on the challenge to write a poem a day for the month of April! You can adjust this challenge to your own schedule as well, but it's a good way to motivate yourself to write. There's quite a few sites to find prompts on, but my personal favorite is probably Writer's Digest.
  • Read out a poem to someone. Bonus points for memorization!
  • Check out a poetry book from the library, or use that stash of Vroman's gift cards to buy one. Poetry books are one of the least checked out books in the library, so give them a little love <3
  • Plan a poetry party with a few writer friends, and just revel in it all. Read it, write it, talk about it. Use it as an excuse to just do something fun!
  • Explore a new poetic form. There's a ton out there. (check out the contests page for the Senryu Contest -- it's so cool to try and write)
  • Celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 29 by sharing a favorite poem with your friends, either through social media or a more personal text. Maybe even share one of your own you've written this month!
